Stephanie's family has run out of money as well from spending their own money to care for other peoples discarded pets. They are currently unable to pay utilities, buy gas for their vehicles, cleaning supplies for their home which is the shelter for dogs and cats, grain for the horses and food for their family.  They need help.

I am the secretary for the animal shelter.  To contact the shelter directly, phone 585-493-2309.

Did you know that only one in ten dogs and one in twelve cats born in the US ever find a permanent home? Did you know that 800 cats and dogs are euthanized every hour because there are not enough homes? The average life span of a cat is 13 years. The average time a person keeps a cat is 3 years. We are telling you this so you understand what an uphill battle every one in animal rescue faces every day.

Stephanie’s Animal Shelter and Rescue, Inc. must stop accepting cats and kittens until further notice. Acceptance of dogs will be on a case by case basis. "I still have four puppies available for adoption and haven’t had a single call to adopt anything," said Stephanie. Her family simply cannot afford to keep spending their own money to support other peoples discarded pets. The financial burden has made it difficult for them to meet their basic living expenses.

Rescuing an animal does not end when you drop it off at an animal shelter. Someone has to care for that animal. This means food, medicines, anti-flea treatment, vaccinations and spay/neuter. With the rising veterinary fees, this can cost up to a few hundred dollars per animal. Spay/neuter is our biggest weapon against cat and dog overpopulation. It is also one of the biggest expenses.

We as a community cannot continue to expect animal control and animal rescue to bear the burden of over population. We need community support for a program to fund low cost spay/ neuter for those animals that do not qualify for the current state programs. Until then, we will have to concentrate on the animals already in our care and try to find them homes.

Meanwhile, we are looking for individuals who would like to join as members and become registered animal foster homes for dogs, cats, or other animals. Anyone interested should contact Stephanie @ 585-493-2309.

Entry for June 13, 2008- NYSEG Electricity Shut Off for Monday, June 16th Help!
photo
Good News first. Jade has been adopted. We hope she will have a long and happy life in her new home. Ayla and one of her pups went to a home together, and Duke found a home as well.

We met many new friends at Home Town Heroes second annual adoption fair in Wayland this past Sunday. One of Ayla's pups was adopted there.

We have shutoff notices for our utility bills again, and we are in desperate need of money. Major repairs on our septic system due to being clogged with pet hair took almost $3000 that should have gone to other expenses. NYSEG gave Stephanie no sympathy when she asked for a little more time. They will shut off the electricity on Monday unless we pay $700. Without electricity we cannot pump water for the cats, dogs and farm animals. Help.

Entry for April 20, 2008 Abandoned Cats with Kittens Found in a Ditch
photo
I'm sure many of you saw Stephanie on the news with the tiny kittens and their mothers. Spaying the first female cat could have prevented all of this. For us this is just the beginning of the annual deluge of cats and kittens, and our finances are precarious at best. This is why we ask for a surrender fee of $25 per cat, and one of many reasons pet owners dump their unwanted cats and kittens instead of leaving them at a shelter. $25 only covers the cost of a feline leukemia test. It doesn't cover food, litter, worm medicine, vaccinations or spay/neuter. We still have cats from last year that were never adopted. We spayed and neutered as many as we could so they wouldn't have to spend their lives in cages.

We are still in need of volunteers to help with fund raising to keep the shelter going. We have planned another yardsale at a date to be announced. And we hope to set up boothes at several local festivals and the Wyoming County Fair. We are also planning another bowl-a-thon in the fall with a chinese auction. Money raised from these activities and direct donations comprise a third of our annual budget. One-third comes from adoption fees and surrender fees, and the other third comes from our pockets. This year we don't have that much to spare from our own budgets. We really need your help.

Last but not least, Jack has been adopted and Jade has a meet and greet appointment. This week we have two new dogs in our Petfinder listings. Diesel, a beautiful 6 month old boxer mix and Gus a handsome friendly hound 2-3 years old. Both are openly friendly.

Entry for April 13, 2008 Meet Jade, Our Featured Pet
photo
Jade is a sweet girl and just a little uncertain in her new environment.     Stephanie reassures her as we begin shooting pictures for our Petfinder listings.

Jade is a great dog that gets along with people and other animals. She is spayed and up-to-date on her vaccinations as well as house trained. She was surrendered by her owner due to a family medical problem. Please call Stephanie @ 585-493-2309 for an appointment if you would like to come and meet her. Please leave a message in case Stephanie can't get to the phone. Or email your phone number and she will return your call at her earliest convenience.
