Hi, I am Chris the Board Secretary for Stephanie's Animal Shelter and Rescue, Inc. Due to hand surgery last year, I was able to spend a great deal of Summer 2004 working at Stephanie's. I was amazed and appalled at the sheer numbers of cats and kittens coming into the shelter compared to our dismal adoption rate. Many were sweet, older cats ranging from 1-12 years old, spayed/neutered, even declawed. We advertised cats for adoption week after week for a $10 adoption fee and even free, but our adoption rate barely improved. There was no way we could save them all, but I knew I could save at least a few---specifically older cats that came to us spayed or neutered. I even took in come cats with litters, but the mortality rate of kittens of unvaccinated parents was heart breaking. But I did manage. with the help of Perry Veterinary Clinic. to save one tiny kitten who lost his mother at two weeks, Bubba..
Below are some of the older cats that I am now fostering. I can't take any more in, but I am hoping some of you who read this will help. These older cats adapt more readily than you would think. All I do is open their crate in a quiet room, pet them and gently coax them out, show them the food, water and litter box. They usually make themselves at home within a few days. |
